Get inside your four-year-old’s head with this simple trick

May 12, 2023 | Practical Parenting

What is your preschooler thinking about when he’s staring at a squirrel, putting ketchup on his pancake, trying to take the dog’s temperature?

My aunt shared a fun tool for getting a glimpse inside your preschooler’s hilariously incredible mind.

Ask, “So, what do you think?”

If he’s too old for this trick, he’ll respond, “About what?” But if you ask him young enough, he’ll just bring you in on whatever racehorse is currently Seabiscuit-ing its way around his brain track.

“What if Pikachu was made of cheese?”

“How many dollars does it costed to get to the moon?”

“I’m going to need a boomerang, as soon as possible.”

Kids are masters of the non sequitur, so jumping in mid-thought may give you a glimpse inside that you’d never get with a more specific question.

If your old-soul child asks for more specificity, “About what?” Tell him, “About anything. What’s taking up your thoughts lately?”

Go try it! Then come back and leave a comment, sharing what they told you. Can’t wait to hear!
